I wished I'd had one the other day

It was I who had the engine failure. The fire was actually fuelled by oil from the sump pouring onto the catalytic converter - they are designed to run very hot. When the oil ran out, the fire burned out. Luckily, nothing else caught light. With the cat directly under the engine on my model year, I shudder to think what might have happened if the fire had lasted a bit longer.
As it was, standing there helpless and not knowing whether it was going to get better or worse, I really wished I'd bought a fire extinguisher. Since the flames were underneath, I would have felt confident enough to spray an extinguisher under there. I would not lift the bonnet to fight a fire from above, though. Even after the fire had apparently burned out, I waited for the fire service to arrive and let them lift it!
When I get my car back on the road, I think I ought to be thankful for the warning and buy an extinguisher.
I think you need to be sensible. I would have tackled the fire I had that night, but had it looked like the entire engine bay was on fire, I would have run as fast as I could. Also, if it didn't look like I was having an immediate effect, I would have given up. If I live, I can buy another car. If not, I don't need the car anyway.
