If your temps in CA are moderate (i.e., typically between 32-90°F ), you can use 10w30 synthetic year around, but I'd go for 10 or 15w40. I live in Louisiana where the temps get very steamy in summer and rarely <20°F in winter, and I use 15w40 year around--synthetic, of course.
Dick's contention that heavier oil deceases performance is probably true, but likely not measurably and certainly not by any seat-of-the-pants estimate. This will also vary from brand to brand. Heavy oil does not flow as well cold, and most of your engine's wear is manifested when first cranked after sitting for more than a few hours, like overnight. However, an oil with a 10w40 API rating will flow like a 10-weight at 0°F, yet will protect like a 40-weight at 212°F. I think you'd be well covered with this scenario. So, I tend to side with Michael Smith, who recommends a 10w40 in summer in Canada. In the States, I'd say it would be appropriate for any region in the contiguous U.S. IMO, you don't need anything >10 or 15w40, with the possible exception of Castrol's 5w50, which held up well against Mobil 1 in a test I have.
If you select a brand, I'd recommend (in alpha order) Amsoil, Mobil 1, or Royal Purple. I use the latter, but like athletic shoes, pick the one that fits the best for your application(s). Researching oil is like researching atomic bombs. Meaningful info is scarce, and within oil-company propaganda potentially biased. M1 is available anywhere, RP at many Napa stores, but Amsoil may be impossible to find in many locations, though mail order is always an option. Dick will cheerfully ship you cases of Amsoil, while RP can be purchased at a discount at http://www.oiltown.com.
