Mark, if you're going to do this yourself, I would say that the job
is an elementary one. This doesn't mean that it's easy, but there will
be some effort involved. First, I assume you don't have a car lift.
This means that rather than just dropping the transmission out, along
with half the frame/cradle, you'll probably want to pull the whole
engine/transaxle out from above, with an engine lift or some sort of
hoist arrangement. Even though the books only give a few hours to
take out the drivetrain, I would conservatively estimate that this
project could easily take the 4 days that you'll have free. It's been
my experience that there's always some "little" unforeseen issue that
crops up to overcome. If you're lucky, there'll only be one! It is
more work than just replacing the auto', but once you have the drivetrain
out of the vehicle, access to a lot of the parts you have to change is
that much easier. Aaron's correct, in a sense, when he says the job is
straight forward. Everything's just a matter of unbolting and bolting.
However, even unbolting can be trying, sometimes! If you decide on doing
it, I would highly recommend a very thorough cleaning of the engine
compartment, above and below, before you begin the job - especially the
area between the firewall and the engine. It can get pretty grimy down
there if there's any leaks in your power steering hoses, etc. I did mine
twice. Once, before starting the job, and again while the drivetrain was
out of the vehicle.
