I did the conversion on my 87. Took me about four days, I think.
This is probably the toughest Do-It-Yourself job for the car...
I still consider it DIY because it does not require significant investment in specialized tools... and it does not require special knowledge or training.
It does take a lot of time. Ideally, you should have a donor car available for parts and reference. In addition to the transmission, you will need the cluthc and brake pedals, the shifter assembly, an axle and axle support, and the flywheel.
If you are not very limber, you will probably need help attaching the pedal assembly-- because it's way under the dash. You will probably need help handling the transmission during final removal and during re-assembly.
IIRC, all of the tools that you need are readily available at a local parts store. It really helps to have an impact wrench.
You will need to order a bunch of parts from your favorite supplier ( clutch plate, disc, master and slave cylinders, clutch lines, etc). In addition, you may find other parts to replace while you are working. It's best to have the time to get the parts. ( that is-- it may be better to work on it over two weekends instead of four days straight... it'll give you some time to order/receive parts).
There are a few people here that have actually done the conversion or worked closely with their mechanics during the conversion... so there is plently of help if you get stuck.
Feel free to email me if you have specific questions.
