AC conversion to R-134 question

I want to save some money converting to R-134 on my 1992 9k, as the St. Louis Saab dealer quoted me $1000.00 to do the job.
My R-12 system runs fine most of the time, but occasionally I have to give a sticking expansion valve a tap to get things going again. When I convert, I'd like to repalce that expansion valve along with the dryer/receiver.
Is it feasable to take it to a local AC guy, sell him the R-12 that he removes from my system, then buy the expansion valve, dryer/receiver from saabnet sponsers, repalce them myself, then go to a Saab mechanic, or possibly just an AC repairman, for the conversion kit installation?
Ideas on saving money for this conversion are appreciated.
