While the expansion valve is a matter of 2 bolts in the aquarium, the dryer was a real pain. I had to takle it from the top, the bottom and the wheel well with the liner removed ad manged to dammage the dryer-condensor hose. You need a tiny hands to avoid the pain ... try to the remove all hoses first before removing the filter.
I wanted to convert to R-134A, but the quotes I got were almost undecent ($CA875) and since one A/C shop was willing to test/fill/test R-12 for $170, I could not resist. So far so good. I would like to top it with an A/C stop leak to prevent leaks, kinda a BL.

I paid $CA45/lb for R-12, I do not see why the A/C shop would not take it back and sell you R-134A.
Check your Saab Dealer for the conversion kit.
Expansion valve: $30
Dryer/filter: $45
R-12 $30/lb , took 2 lbs to fill it
Ester oil: $8
Test: $15
Labor: $60
