Flushing of an engine removes and suspends particles of carbon into the lubrication system. These usually circulate THROUGH the engine BEFORE the oil pump picks them up and sends them to the filter element. Most new filters will collect everything larger than (depending on the filter)10-25 microns. If the filter is older or ready to be changed, it may just bypass the junk right back into the oil system. I learned this after a very expensive engine and propellor rebuild, 5 hours after an engine flush and oil change, when changing from Aeroshell 100 to Phillips Multi-Vis. Engine failure resulted due to a carbon packing the main bearing oil gallery and causing a total loss of oil pressure to the bearing. Fortunately, in our cars we can just pull over and call the tow truck - I was not so lucky. I never flush with anything except the oil I intend to use-forever. Start with fossil-keep fossil, start with synthetic-keep with synthetic. But what ever you do do it early, BEFORE the engine has built sludge and deposits. IMHO
