I was planning to switch to synthetic at 80,000 miles with no flush (when my supply of Castrol GTX 10W30 runs out). But now you have me worried.
I suppose there is always nonzero risk in switching, but is there any data to quantify this risk?
Surely, the synthetic oil manufacturers have extensively researched and tested their product under a whole range of pre-conditions, have they not? And they would have issued some kind of warning or advisory if there was a "non-negligible" probability of catastrophe when switching, would they not?
Something like, "Warning: The Surgeon General has advised that if your mileage is greater than 100,000 miles and/or you haven't been changing oil according to recommended intervals, then switching to synthetic could be hazardous to your health."
But I haven't seen any such warning.
Am I being too trusting of the oil manufacturers?
