Base boost with JT exhaust

I posted recently asking for advice on re-setting base boost after fitting a JT 3" exhaust to my '93 CSE. My service mechanic said he had shortened the rod "a tiny bit" after fitting the system - I interpreted this as half a turn. Before going back to basics as Aero Guy suggested, this afternoon I wound it in another full turn, so it's now been shortened 1½ turns in total.
The sky did not fall, glad to say. According to my cheapo gauge - with calibrations, but not what I'd call "calibrated" - I now have base boost about .4 bar (5.7 psi) with maximum sustained boost .75 psi (10.7 psi). On hard acceleration the needle kicks round to about 1 bar before settling back, the start of the red on the dash gauge, without initiating fuel cutoff. That's on 95 octane, ie. Regular here in the UK - I normally run Super @ 97 octane but couldn't get it on my last two fill-ups.
On my automatic the maximum boost spec is, I think, .77 bar, which probably just means the Trionic's working properly but my gauge is inaccurate. I'm going to run the car like this for a bit and see what happens. Comments welcome!
