Charcoal canister - vacuum leak, function of hoses.

I have been struggling a bit with low boost pressure and somewhat weak performance on my -88 9kT. The bypass valve could not hold vacuum, so I replaced it with a new one. The advance unit on the distributor was replaced for the same reason. Both with minor results. Yesterday I tested the vacuum hose to the charcoal canister. Air passed freely in both directions, possibly due to a leaky diafragm. I removed the end of the hose at the canister side and plugged it, with positive effect on boost pressure and performance. Now to my question: There are two other hoses connected to the canister. As I understand, please correct me if I am wrong: one that brings gas fumes from the tank to the charcoal, the other evacuating the fumes from the canister to the intake manifoil, the last process regulated by the vacuum hose connected to the diafragm-regulated valve? What harm can it do to plug the vacuum hose as I did, except some gas fumes on the run? The smell of gas inside the car disappeared 99% after I removed the plug in the tank cap, now venting the fumes from the tank to free air.
