In a copper wire, the cooler it is the less restance it has. When electricity flows through it, the wire will warm slightly. This will increase the restance. If you overload the wire it gets real hot and things start melting. Kind of a catch-22. If the wire gets warm, the resistance goes up and the power lost in the wire will go up. this power is disipated as heat which makes the wire have even higher resistance which will ioncrease the power. Kind of a nasty circle. The same thing can happen in a bad connection, With one other bad side effect. The heat can cause the contacts to loose their spring tension which will make the connection even worse.
