I think. I, too, have a 91 9kT (140k). It's a bit balky going into second, and I've fallen into the habit of double-clutching (antiquated but free)--but this isn't as much fun as a quick-shifting take-off.
I drove a "twin" car just about two years ago that had only 60k on it and was really impressed with the smoothness of the shift. It wasn't Honda-like, but it sure beat what was/is in my car. Certainly, it was a match for the 94 Aero I drove last summer. Other aspects of that vehicle were such that it didn't persuade me to swap, though.
My take after that experience was that when it comes time to do something about this vehicle's gearbox, a thorough rebuild of the one I own is what I will explore. I don't know how realistic this is, but WTH this is a romantic relationship rather than a simply logical one. I do hear about boxes being rebuilt without the synchros being redone--sounds crazy to me, because I know how smooth this box can be when it's at its best.
