is not because changing lubricants could salvage the situation. I also ahve a '91 9kt, and I have put two rebuilt Eriksson 5-spd trannies in it. I bought it at 110K miles, and the former owner had cracked the transmission case, so it was leaking oil. It also shifted poorly into 5th. The Saab dealership installed the Eriksson unit and filled it with Saab synthetic. The 2nd gear synchro started going after 2K miles. I have to admit to perhaps 8 or 10 quick shifts in there, as I was perhaps enjoying the car a bit too much, but going out after 2K miles.
Eriksson sent me a new tranny, again installed by the dealer and again filled with Saab synthetic. Very careful with it this time, but after 7K miles, same symptoms. I talked with Matt at Eriksson, who suggested the synthetic lubricant might be to blame. I switched to dino, and synchro problems disappeared.
I've heard stories of other synthetics eating the synchros.
As to the quality of Eriksson rebuilds, even when freshly installed I can't say that either tranny shifted particulaly smoothly, not as good as our '88 9kt or '95 CSE, but better than an '87 900S (that's pretty much the history of my cars, except for the VW). The Eriksson people were very helpful, but I was left with a feeling that the rebuild could have been better, although I have no other experience to compare it to. If I ever decide to get another rebuild, I'm considering sending it to Andrew's or some place like that. If you can do without it for awhile, that might be an option for you. And for lubricant, I'd fill it with what it was designed for - dino 10W30. Good luck.
