A) some of the performance you feel with your '91 is from the lower overall gear ratio of the '91/92 versus the '93 on units. So, substituting a newer gearbox may not be to your liking. The gearbox was reinforced in the final drive for 1991, and reinfoced more in the final drive for 1992 and later gearboxes. AFIK, the gears and bearings in the rest of the unit are unchanged. The 1st and 2nd gear synchros were updated along the line, I think, to "dual cone" design, but that puts you into the later units with the taller gear ratio.

B) Putting "slippery stuff" into a transmission is a mistake. Synchros operate by the friction between the moving parts. RedLine MTL has been used with good success by many people to improve the shift characteristics of the C900 gearboxes. I used it in my '91, and Tom Townsend proclaimed it to be among the smoothest shifting 9K's he'd driven. (Tom recommends Amsoil 20W50 racing oil on account of it's superior performance in the 4-ball wear test.) Note that any switch to synthetic lubricant in an older engine or transmission exposes you potential seal leakage - no matter what the oil companies say. It's happened to too many people too often to be a myth. Maybe it's just that synthetic leaks faster once a leak happens, and old machines tend to develop leaks.

As for rebilding the transmission, it shouldn't be a big deal.
