Low on gas, car runs rough, oil light stays on

Our son yesterday let the gas run low until the warning light came on in our 91KS, about 175K miles. The car he said was making alot of noise, whatever that means, and the oil light came on and stayed on. He then drove the car home back to his girlfriend's house - 2 minutes away he claims.
This morning he checked the oil level, it was OK. He added a couple of gallons of gas and a bottle of injector cleaner thinking that he screwed up the injectors. Somehow he managed to get the car started and then drove to the gas station to fill it. Oil light still on, car stiil rough and making noise. The car died after leaving the gas station. He got scared and had it towed to girl friend's house.
Any ideas, I live 60 miles from his girlfriends house. I'm thinking of changing the gas filter and change the oil tomorrow night.
thanx
