I've got to agree with Bill D on this one. Running low on gas isn't likely to cause any problems, and certainly not one involving the oil pressure light. For furture reference if the red oil pressure light comes on, then stop! The noise is likely to be very noisy lifters which aren't getting lubed and possibly the bearings being eaten up. It is very unusual for a 9k to experience catastropic oil pressure failure. The pump is an extremely robust piece. Definetly check oil pressure on a gauge before anything else. If it really has lost pressure and was driven for miles then engine may need a total rebuild, but only a teardown will tell.
