It may be a far more serious problem than low gas. The oil light staying on, the engine running rough, then the engine dying - all suggest a lubrication problem big time to me. I would get the car to a mechanic before trying to turn the engine again though the damage may be done. Could be just the oil pump failed but if the car was driven many miles after that failed, then yu may have failed bearings. Sorry to be a pessimist.
