I think intolerance of Japanese cars in the States is the exception rather than the rule. After all, we buy them in droves, don't forget. What you hear on this board may be little more than tongue-in-cheek remarks.
What intolerance that may exist is probably limited to jealosy or resentment based on the "buy American" ethic. With the former, a few have trouble with the fact that Japanese cars are better than American, for the most part, and are the best sellers here. Some won't buy anything but American regardless of how good or bad the product is for distorted patriotic reasons.
About 20 years ago I met a man with a strange tatoo on his arm, and I asked about it. He was a sailor on the USS Independence during WWII. This was the ship that carried "Little Boy" (The Bomb) to the South Pacific, was subsequently sunk by a Japanese sub, and the survivors floated around for four days while sharks and thirst ravaged them. He said he could never buy a Japanese product because of deep-seated emotional issues, but this is an exception. Most have forgotton WWII and simply want the best car available for their money.
