American chauvinism is the exception when it comes to automobiles.
Most people buy Japanese on the assumption of better build quality,
which is probably a myth, also. Most of the Jap' vehicles sold here
are built here by Americans. This is just anecdotal, but from what
I hear, conditions on the assembly line are not geared so much towards
quality but towards quantity, which relates to the speed of production
on the assembly line and labor productivity in general. Which is essentially no different from what motivates production in American
owned plants. I have a feeling, though, that it's a little different
in Sweden or with the Swiss for that matter. It seems that they'd
almost forego profitability for the sake of producing a well-designed
product with relatively better wages and working conditions, whether it's
for the manufacture of watches or automobiles. Besides, as much as
the Japanese have invested in our economy, the biggest investor, by far,
have been Brit's. Which is kinda ironic. Think of all the industry that
was lost in Britain during the Thatcher reign (it really was a reign of
terror - waged against the most organized sector of your society: industrial workers, amongst others), why couldn't that investment be
made in Britain? I'm sure there are plenty of Brit's that buy Japanese
motorcycles, yet Triumph makes a bike that can compete with anyone.
I think that whatever chauvinism exists, does so as a reaction to the
onslaught that has occured over jobs in various industries. GM and Ford
have plants in almost every country on earth. It's of little consolation
to workers who lost jobs in Detroit, however. Is it any wonder that their
anger and chauvinism is mis-directed at other multi-nationals?
