Pls answer a general question about O2 Sensors

This is a general question about the O2 sensor (actually on my '95 Ford Aerostar van) ...whoa before you click the back button ... my other car is a Saab '91 9000 CDT .... and I have been a long term visitor here, just not very regular. I know the level of technical capabilities available here so I am asking this question.

Ford says they have three different sensors for my year and model and want the model number off my old sensor to pick the right one. Why are there three calibrations? Is it like: California emissions? or high altitude / low altitude? or trapping the customer for spare parts sales?

What would happen if I installed the non-specific Bosch sensor (half the price by the way) that Pepboys calls sells for my vehicle?

I promise next time I will ask a Saab question.
