to check. Jack the front up. Crawl under the car. Look up between the firewall and the transmission to locate the shift input shaft. Shine a flash light on it. There is a rubber piece between the end of the input shaft and a rod from the shifter. Take a good look at the coupler to see if it has split.
I'd think the 9k 5 speed transmission and clutch should last many more miles than 100k.
