An overheated turbo can also be caused by lack of coolant, but it may not have been destroyed.
To check the head gasket situation, check the dipstick for water in the oil. The liquids don't really mix, and a result is foaming if there has been sufficient contamination. If you can, let the engine run until it warms up then shut it down; next remove the dipstick and let a drop of oil fall on the hot exhaust manifold. If the drop merely smokes away, you've got oil only; if it sizzles while it smokes, you've got water, too.
