good afternoon all,
Today was one of those days when you have to ask yourself: was I better of not to touch the car? I started out putting a new water pump impeller/shaft/seal kit in my dearly beloved. Well all went well till about five minutes after i had started the car. I hear a very loud clunk..snap..then grinding. It was one of those sounds that when you hear you just say OH SHIT. Well after removing the water pump again I find my idler shaft decided to disentigrate. There is absolutely nothing left of the teeth. I am not exactly sure why it did this. The W/P shaft came from vintage imports along with the impeller. I compared all the measurements of the original shaft to the new one and everything came out the same. The only difference i could see was that the cogs of the new W/P shaft were maybe a little more squared off and not quite as deep. I was extremely careful when i put it together, and i dont believe i used near the force necessary to crack a tooth on the idler. Anyway there was obviously something not right. So i am now stuck with having to pull the engine. Aside from making myself feel better by writing this I do have a purpose for this posting. Does anyone know of a source for a 12 cog idler shaft? Also has anyone had this happen before? I have come up with one good thing from all this. When i pull that shaft it is getting beeded and clear coated for a nice display on the desk. A constant reminder of the wonders and blunders of the currently undrivable masterpiece in my driveway.
