When using my punch method the shaft is allowed to rotate just as freely as with the tool. when installing with that tool the shaft rotates at the tool and in the bearing. In my case using a punch it simply rotates by means of the bearing. In some ways using the tool puts undue stress on the bearing as the force is directed through the balls to the outer race. By tapping on the outer race you dont risk that damage, but trust me I dont disagree my lack of using that tool could have caused some of the trouble. I think if i had caused the damage while inserting the shaft the engine would most likely not have run for 15 minutes with no problem unless a cog was cracked and stayed in place for a while then let lose which i suppose is possible. I would argue that the special tool is more important in removal. Anyway I am no saab expert thats just my take on things. Like i said i do plan on designing a home made version of that tool if I can find the tap.
