Yeah, those control knobs are garbage- where the cable ends at the housing always breaks- if it is not held stationary, you wont be able to pull any cable. If you are replacing the cables get Gore lined cables from a bike shop- they slide really nicely. To fix the cables securely you can epoxy them in place, or rig something up with some zip-ties. Crude, but very effective.
As to that awful faux wood veneer, I replaced mine with brushed aluminum sheet I got from onlinemetals.com. Measure out the three pieces you need, and they will cut them to your dimensions. The biggest pain in the ass with this problem is cutting out all the switch blanks. Took me half a day and about twenty cut-off wheels for my dremel tool. Looks very nice though. Nobody even suspects it is not factory. Another nice thing about the aluminum trim: you will be surprised how much it brightens up your dash- you would never realize how dark that wood garbage is.
