Right, I think I've got it into a position where it will work! The controls are still fairly stiff, btu they do work, which is a heck of a lot better than before!
Basically, I stripped the control box down after noting where the various workings are located. Then I marked where to drill pairs of holes for 2.5mm wide cable ties. I put them over the middle part of the metal brakcet which is supposed to hold the cable sheath the control box. I put two pairs of holes for one cable as even after lubricating it the cable was pretty stiff. The other two I've made do with one pair.
Then I put the control box back together, smearing the mechanisms with silicone grease. Hopefully things will remain clean in there and not get gummed up with dirt! Then I realised I hadn't put the cable ties in, and had to do it the hard way!
I left as much of the original mounting brackets in place as possible to act as guides for the cables, but they REALLY didn't want to sit straight! But the cable ties allowed them to follow a more "natural" curve, meaning they should be a bit smoother than if they were forced straight.
Time will tell if my under the cover bodge is successful!
