I just replaced the waterpump seals and bearing a couple of months ago on my 1978 EMS with 214k. It was just the second time in her 27 year history. I never had to replaced the impeller or shaft, just seals and bearings, so how's that for reliability!!! Really pretty good IMHO, especially since this beautiful EMS has always been a daily driver with A/C in nice 'n hot southern California!!! I always use high grade fuel (25% 100 and 75% 91 at 76) and change oil every 1500 miles, plugs every 2500 miles and take very, very, very good care of her in general. Yeah, I'm a freak...

Ok, I have to admit, I have all the original Saab tools to rebuilt my EMS from front to back, and yes, you will need the original tools for the waterpump!!! Otherwise it's like playing russian roulette!

All parts are available, you just need to know where to look for them, but just look at all the postings on this issue, enough people know where to get them, so just ask if you don't. I know a guy who took a part three engines to get a good aux. shaft and also heard a CalTech/JPL guy machined a brand new shaft from some hi-tech metal (somekind of titanium alloy, I believe...) for a SCCA 99 race car, wow!

On the electric waterpump, they work pretty good, but the ones I saw, all work continiously at the same speed, no matter the engine speed, what's weird to me, because other applications (not only cars) seem to make the pump speed relate to the engine speed. If you're going to use an electric pump I would advice you to do that too, it's not very difficult.

But if you can find the parts and tools to rebuilt the original mech. waterpump, do it! Keep it original, keep it special, it's a Saab!

Good luck!
