Leaky seals-from switching to synthetic oil? Posted by patquin [Email] (#9) [Profile/Gallery] (more from patquin) on Fri, 30 Sep 2005 05:41:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It has taken a while, but I finally have an idea of how I might have gotten a "wet clutch" (see earlier postings).
After acquiring the car two years ago, I started in on fixing and upgrading anything wrong on the engine, to see if I could improve reliabilty. Whille at the Hershey SOC, I won a case of mobil-1 10-30 and a dozen oil-filters (luck of the Irish-ha!). So at the next oilsw change, I started using the mobil-1. Well, the latest trip to Stratton was the longest trip with the new oil.
Doing some research, I'm reading that sometimes in an older engine, seals can shrink over time, but that conventional oils can sometimes varnish up the small leaks. The synthetics, on the other hand, tend to clean up the varnish, especially on a nice long trip on a hot day. My rear main seal is definitely leaking a bit, so I'm guessing that the synthetic oil cleaned up a dirt-plugged oil-seal leak.
Anyone else have experience with this? It certainly caught me by surprise!
