That was an issue when synthetics were first introduced decades ago. The problem isn't so much that the synthetics caused shrinkage, it was more than the mineral based lubricants softened the seals and caused swelling. Removing the mineral oil allowed the seals to return to their natural state. However, the wear of rotating cranks in the swollen seals remained and became a gap when the seal returned to closer to its original size. The bad publicity had formulators scrambling to develop a synthetic oil that didn't contribute to the seal leaking. Those re-formulated compounds were quickly substituted for the originals.
If your synthetic is the root cause of the seal leak you've experienced, it would have to be some original formula oil someone has had hiding on a back shelf for 20 years.
