Thanks for the input, I have no idea how many miles are on the engine. The odometer says 72k, but the engine and transmission have been out already, I can tell. The engine is in very good shape from appearances, with good compression. The previous owner didn't know much--so I'm running blind.
I'm a big fan of synthetics. I believe that any new or rebuilt engine should be running synthetics, just based on the chemistry and statistical data. I'm lucky to have a shrink-wrap NOS set of complete engine seals and gaskets (saving for a rainy day), so I will soon be pulling the engine and replacing both main seals, the timing and pan gaskets, and valve cover gaskets. Also on the transmission--the clutch, release bearing and three seals.
Then I'm going to run it on the synthetic--hopefully for a long time!
With a vintage driver, it's always the same cycle:
drive==>discover a problem==>research the problem==>find the parts==>repair==>drive...
