Here's a pretty good link from an Amsoil site http://www.bestsyntheticoil.com/dealers/amsoil/seals.shtml; you will find similar information if you search for FAQ from many major mfrs; & let's be clear that while I think Amsoil is well-regarded in the technical community I do not personally use it nor think it better than other name-brand full-synthetic motor oils.
Equally anecdotal counter-examples to yours: A) With significant but unknown mileage on my V4 transmission, I would guess anywhere from 20-30K miles to double that, I switched from QS 75W to Redline MTL and have used it for several years, with a change or three. I cannot certify that I never top up, but any fluid loss is slight and not troublesome. Best I recall it is always full when I check. B) At about 100K miles on V4 engine rebuild done about 12 years ago, I switched a year or so ago from conventional 10W30 to Mobil 1 5W30. Almost 2K on the current oil and still full.
These and other reasons make me a strong advocate of synthetics for most applications engine and other.
Regarding your story I trust you will recognize that any seal will leak eventually regardless of lubricant used. Do you know how many miles on your engine, how many years, & other pertinent history?
