Had exactly the same thing, except when the valve was unseized and everything re-lubricated, put everything back together and the damn thing leaked! So, got a spare one and proceeded to assemble again, then the coil snapped! Got yet another spare and 2 hours later everything was sweet. I posted this query a while ago and got no reply, but I assume that the coil acts as a secondary control valve. For example, if you set the dash control to hot, it will only move the control valve ( to allow coolant entry ) if the coil is at a certain temperature, assuming the heat exchanged from the matrix to the coil gives an indication as to the actual temperature of the coolant. Basically it is working the same as the thermostat i.e. keeping the circulation line to a minimum until the coolant actually needs cooling. Hmmmm....
