Before I began I attempted to change the oil in the car, but to no avail... what kind of special tool do you need to get the oil drain plug out? To me it appeared to be a brake tool type wrench that one would normally use to put the pad retaining rings on for drum brakes. I was unable to locate a tool like this and was wondering what tool should be used and what other tools may be used in improvisation? I did change the oil filter before I tried these additional steps.
I did as you gentle-men advised, sprayed "JB Blaster" down the plug holes, ran motor without plugs, waited, checked other fluids, poured gas down the carb and the Saab 96 fired right up. Upon further inspection and while running, one of the blades on the fan has a chunk missing out of it; the alternator light and the oil light continue to remained on; the fan, alternator, belts, etc., move as expected; the car makes a "werererer" noise, kind of like air through a propeller shaft; and the oil pump did not appear to be working.
I poured the diesel in the oil filler cap while the car was running, and no smoke poured out the back. I think after 10 years the car kinda liked a little lube.
Under the "Can't I be a blond for 5 minutes" catagory, I tried the clutch and the shifter, In reverse the car made a litttle grind noise, then I tried some forward gear. The car appeared to want to go in those directions, but didn't move. ... After I shut the car off I figured out that may be caused because the emergency brake was on. :<) Ill try it next time without the brake being on for sure though.
My plan now is to find this special oil drain tool, start the cars again for a second, drain the oil, replace this special drain plug with a normal one if possible and available, put in this 5-20W oil I found and try the car again. Maybe do the "JB Blaster" and diesel thing again. If the oil light goes out, good, if not I have hired a supervisor to help me pull the motor. Do you all think that the oil pick up tube is clogged, or can the pump itself be bad? I will have a pump there on had, if available (do they still make them?). It would be nice to know that they are pinto pumps also.... It there anything else I should change while I'm in there, like those fiber bearings, or the ??????
Regarding the alternator light remaining on, could that be because the battery was a little low and needed some charging, but because I was not running it long, the alternator could not complete it's duty and turn off the light? or is there a possibility of something else. The alternator has previous indicia of a salvage yard, stating that the alternator came from a SAAB 900? I will place the battery on a charger for next time and see if there is any change.
Thank you gentle-men for your assistance. The car seems to really want to go. The only other issues with it are the front floor board behind where the pedels are appears to be rusting a little thin and the SAAB logo came off of the grill and is in the glove box. Any other suggestions you can make are greatly appreciated.
