It sounds like you are mixing up the drain plug for the gearbox oil and the engine oil. The engine oil drain plug sits on the side of the oil pan and has a regular bolt head. The gearbox drain plug sits further back and is accessible through a hole in the engine floor pan. This plug has a square hole in it. You can use a 3/8" socket wrench with an extension to loosen it. One of my friends father drives a 95 V4 wagon and decided to change the engine oil one day. He ended up draining the gearbox oil and filling in another 3.5L of oil in the engine. While the engine survived running with twice the normal amount of oil, the gearbox didn't survive without oil :-(
