I thought of three more ways, besides your ways, to get the drain plug out. One was to ask Mr. Chip if he has the tool, two, to modify a brake retaining spring wrench, and three, drill out the little %^(*^$#. Each of the ways will be attempted this week, excepting the one about having a tool and dye maker make one for me, as mine is in California making driver's side door handles for Dodge Challengers out of titanium so the local car club can get back in their cars and drive. ... It is a sobering sight to see the junkyard, filled with cars, with each make and model having their own specific problem, their weekest link. My manager says "we could have a hundred of these ...., and not have one with a good ....." That is why I had hope for the Saturn, but we have a few of those now also.
One thing I do know is that the local autoparts store has a "Help Section". The people behind this company know this very problem. They re-make the $2.00 parts that cause cars to become obsolete. The little plastic valves on every brake vaccuum assist system, which if the valve goes bad, the brakes become manual.... They make them. The little magnetic drain plugs.... They make them. You would be amazed that every "Help" packet on their shelf represents a car majorly dysfunctioning, which without that part, probably will end up in the junk yard because the owner gets sick of dealing with it. The Help Company will make things that you ask for also.
Oh, but on to the welding up of a exhaust, so I can take this 66 Mercedes to a mechanic who didn't say no (but hasn't said yes) to "Routine Maintence job #008, steps 12-28 in the Mercedes Manual, correcting timing belt stretch." Little does the guy know I have a 75 with the exact same problem coming right after this one, only its a deisel.
Some people are ready, most are able, but few are willing. Unfortunatly you cannot throw money at this problem to fix it.
