Hi Michael,
Yes, you should be fine going straight from dino to syn. You might get some seal leaking, but you could always address that if/when it ever happens. What sort of intervals are you expecting to run? You might consider a half-way filter change the first time, depending on how long you're going.
Now if it were my car, after 145k miles on dino I'd do this:
1) Get at least one bottle of Auto-Rx.
2) Have your indy do a regular oil & filter change, but use a good "fake" synthetic like Shell's Rotella 5W-40 Syn, any of the US-made Castrol oils, or Amsoil's "XL-7500" series oils. (I'd recommend using the larger ACDelco PF13 oil filter for both the cleaning & rinsing stages.)
3) A-Rx comes in 12 oz bottles, so take 2 oz & add them to a fresh qt of oil. You'll use this later. Have your indy add the remaining 10 oz of A-Rx to your crankcase & then bring it up to a full 4L.
4) Drive it for either 1,500 miles (using the smaller PF53 filter) or 2,000 miles (using the larger PF13 filter), then have your indy change ONLY the filter, top up with the pre-mixed oil/A-Rx, & drive for another 1,500/2,000 miles. Also use the pre-mix for any top-ups you'll need along the way.
5) Dump everything, slap on a new filter (either size, but I'd still recommend the larger one) & refill with more good "fake" syn. I'd definitely recommend Shell's Rotella 5W-40 Syn here, since it has more detergents to help remove the junk, & after this length of time you'll probably be into cold weather & will benefit from the 5W- viscosity.
6) Drive for another 2,000 miles, change ONLY the filter again, top up with more oil & drive for another 2,000 miles.
7) Dump everything, refill with M1 5W-40 & a new filter, & drive happy for 10,000 mile intervals.
If you aren't able to even do a filter change (back alley? neighbor's house?), then bring your indy a six-pack of GOOD beer & hand it to him with the new filter. Every time.
I've probably forgotten something, so if I think of it later I'll let you know.
