Re Anders remarks, yes, all those little things do add up - it would be terribly interesting to see an analysis of how much effort each part in the chain adds to the total, on an old and new assembly. But the flip side is that all the loads have a snowballing effect - as the clutch gets harder to operate, it puts more load on the cable, which wears the inner lining or lube off faster, which in turn adds to the total effort. Or a too tight or too loose cable can cause the clutch to wear faster, which increases loading on the cable. Anything one can do to improve things, if only a little, should make a difference in the long run.
I'm still curious about cable friction. It would be really interesting to take a used cable, thoroughly grease it, and reinstall. Unfortunately, considering the work involved in R&Ring it, most of us are going to opt for installing a new cable. Actually, it might be possible to do this by undoing just the lever end and using a motorcycle cable oiler to pressure lube the cable (Hmmm ... wonder if one could inspect the cable end for failure at the same time? The nice thing about cables, is they are designed to fail incrementally, with warning, only thing is we rarely notice the signs in time.)
Which brings up the question, do new Saab cables come lubed, or does Saab expect the plastic linings to do the job.
Re dust, good point. However, the question remains, just because one cannot do a perfect job, does that mean its not worth trying at all? One approach that might work would be blasting the area with brakeclean or something similar, operating the lever to try and work as much crud out as possible, then lubing the points that can be reached with a penetrant moly grease.
