Yes. Certainly what makes sense for me as an owner-mechanics doesn't necessarily make sense for you, Anders, as a professional Saab tech - your job is to fix things so they stay fixed and spare the customer unecessary trips to the shop while I am quite happy if I find a cure that will get another year or 10K out of an expensive to replace component, especially since for me to try it doesn't require a trip to the shop. Some of these fixes can be surprisingly effective though - I sprayed some lube on the bendix of a sticky starter the dealer wanted to replace, and it has stayed fixed for 3 years now!
On the clutch cable issue the line is between doing it right and band-aiding is less clear, because of the well known inadequacies of the design. If we bite the bullet and replace the clutch everytime the action gets unacceptably high, we could easily end up spending an extra $2000-3000 over the life of the vehicle, which makes it more worthwhile to look for patches to keep the system working acceptably long enough to get our money's worth out of the major components.
Oh, quick question. Do you know if the new cables from Saab come lubed, and if not, whether they should be lubed before installing?
