Why people pay $30K or more for a car and then fail to have $30 oil changes done regularly I will never understand (blame Toyota with their "you can practically weld the hood shut!" ads?) Unfortunately, I would guess that you didn't have a reputable shop check this car over BEFORE you bought it, and now you will likely end up paying for their abuse.
A '97 900 turbo is a good car, but I always stress to potential buyers that a solid, documented oil change history is a must prior to purchase of any SAAB, particularly a balance-shaft motor equipped car like yours. If this maintenance history cannot be confirmed, pulling the valve cover is a small cost versus a rebuilt or used engine (we typically install a low mileage used motor from Goldwing in NY for $3500 or so, but some shops will rebuild these motors I'm sure).
I know this information doesn't help you (Bluetex) now, but maybe it will help someone else who is about to make a similar mistake...
The reputable indie shop you referred to in your original post should be capable of pulling the valve cover and should know what they are looking at when they do. You can ask to be there to see for yourself, too.
Good luck,
Eric H.
