Getting an opinion from an indie mechanic on a major serice item is always a good practice.
If it turns out that the clutch does need replacing, I would ask the dealer who sold you the car for a discount, at least on the labor... if they gave you a "glowing" report in writing, and you purchased a car on that basis, you may be able to get free labor (obviously they would not just give you the part since they have to buy it themselves).
If one were knowingly buying a car that needed a premature major repair like that, asking to deduct about half the repair cost from the price would be about right.
