Yes it is important to understand that the cable can only be adjusted to a certain point. If it's streached beyond what the self-adjusting mechanism can compensate for, it's time to replace it. There was a Saab TSB about spacing the cable out from the firewall with washers (cut into a U-shape) to increase the adjustability of the cable.
But this is an awful lot of work for a $50 cable and and hour of work DIY to replace and fix it right.
I tried a Scantech manually adjusted cable....I would not recommend, I could never get it adjusted right. It either worked when hot or cold, but not both. I went back to the OEM Saab self-adjusting cable after 6 months and lots of time spend trying to adjust the manual one without success.
