frozen remote battery, how disactivate alarm? Dangerous

Hi folks!
Was out cross country skiing a few hours north of Montreal yesterday, it's really cold up here now, unusually so... Close to 40 below... Well, while skiing, it's ok! But got back to the car and the remote would not work. I was parked in the middle of a provincial park (no cell phone service), with nobody around for at least 15 miles, was with my girlfriend. I unlocked the car with the key, alarm went off. Tried starting it, went off again... I looked in the manual, which basically said I needed the other remote to disactivate alarm or a new battery. In other words, I was screwed... I started to panic a little at this point, ready to curse the car all the way to hell as I froze to death in my light, sweaty ski clothing. Well, after a few minutes of my girlfriend holding the remote, it's battery had warmed enough to regain ability to function... This saved us.
Was there something I could have done if the key battery had decided not to function? Like disconnect car battery and reconnect? Or pull a fuse or something? I can't believe the car can't be started with the key... Got scared and really pissed off at this swedish obsession with theft... that stupid radio code is a perfect example of stupidity, as most thieves would have to steal a unit first before discovering it couldn't be used in another SAAb (well it can, but you need to call to get the code).
Thanks for your help, I'll keep a copy of procedure in the car with me... I did have a blanket in the car, by the way, and family knew where we were, would eventually have come looking, but I would have had enough time to convice myself this was my last SAAB (that would be sad). Came close though..
Happy holidays!
Richard
