The piston seal rings in the HG might still be working, but the oil passage through the HG is now flowing to the coolant passages. The oil pressure is higher than coolant pressure. So that puts oil into coolant. Now a piston seal ring leak in the HG can put combustion gasses into the coolant, and that would generate soot. If worse, coolant can get into the combustion chamber. But you have a coolant loss, so its leaking into oil, cylinders or out of HG seam to outside of block. Oil is clean. Sounds like HG piston seal ring.
