It's definitely oil in the coolant, not just algae. The liquid has the same color and oily feel as dirty motor oil from an oil change. Also, the inside of the coolant reservoir cap had sort of a frothy "mousse" stuck to it.
After starting this thread, I called a local Saab mechanic, and he suggested doing a cooling system flush, driving the car a lttle, and then testing for exhaust gasses in the (new) coolant. Aparently the exhaust gas upstream of the catalytic converter has lots of CO, which is what they test for. As I was already geared up for a major cooling system overhaul, that sounds like a good plan for tomorrow. He said that driving it (some) in this state won't harm the engine.
I'm pretty sure there is an oil cooler, 'cause I think I recall seing oil hoses going into the radiator area. OTOH, I might just be confused with the oil lines to the turbo. I'll poke around and see this evening.
I just got this car a few weeks ago (at an auction) and I've been adressing other maintenance issues, so I hadn't yet done more than glance at the coolant level. My guess is that the oil has been in the coolant for a while, given its dirty-ness. Although the head gasket came as an upleasant suprise, and I've been replacing a lot of the 100k wear items, I really like the car and feel like I'll have something pretty reliable once the "deferred maintenance" is taken care of. I just hope I can keep my driving record in good shape at the same time !
