Most of the time, I purchase parts from SaabNet sponsors. Occasionally, for convenience or quick turnaround, I go to my local dealer which is about 3 miles from my home.

Recently, I needed four rubber washers for my suspension, which I priced on GenuineSaab.com complimentary parts pricing lookup at $2.90 each. The SaabSite sells these same items for $2.00 each. I also figured that paying for shipping on $8 worth of merchandise would bring the price to about the same as buying them at list, so I went to my local dealer. Boy was I mistaken!

When the dealer priced the items, they were $5.80 each, twice the Saab list price!!! I asked the parts man why they were so expensive, and he tried to tell me that that was what Saab charges. I challenged his logic, told him I knew the Saab list price, and asked for the parts manager. The manager said that the price was $5.80 because the parts had to be air freighted in, and he had to recoup the freight.

I said that if they were air freighted in, that was someone else's bad business decision that I should not have to pay for. Besides, he had only two on stock, and I needed four so an additional order would have be made. The manager then said that he would order in four and charge me the Saab list ($2.90 each).

Long story short, practices like this are why intelligent people shun going to dealers for parts and service. They think that the public is ignorant (and stupid) when it comes to auto service. Many are unfortunately, and these are the ones that the dealers prey on. The moral of the story is... Caveat Emptor and do your homework before you buy.
