Well, if you are going to do it yourself, you may already have a covered space or garage, and some tools.
Think about what an indy has that cost him:
Space, either owned or leased
Special tools
Parts stock (at least for common stuff)
Utilities--gas, electric, water, sewer
Business license
Medical insurance
Liability insurance
Taxes
Taxes
Social Security taxes
Waste disposal fees
Expendable shop supplies
People to do the payroll
People to do the taxes
Telephone
Internet connection
Advertising
Other expendable supplies--lightbulbs, towels, TP, soap, cleaning supplies
Payment plus perks, if any to any employees
Vacation time to employees
Retirement program, since even indys don't live forever.
I'm sure there are a bunch of other items that an indy could come up with, but if you can get a really good job done at a fair price, everyone wins.
