Hello Bob,
I don't really understand discussion of poor handling charctrestics of 9-3 since 9-3's driving char. are considered excellent at least in Finland where conditions can be very extreame. TM Magazine (very popular Mag. in Finland) just tested 16 different car in Winter conditions. Saab finished second only behind new Audi A4. Sure 9-3 platform is old but it outperformed car's like Mercedes Benz, BMW 520, Volvo S60, new Ford Focus etx. TM stated that although Saab 9-3 very old platform it still is easy to handle in all winter conditions and its headlights are one of the best ever tested. Let me stress that the purpose of the this test was to measure Winter charcteristics of the each car.
In addition Saab's insurance class is way below average here I think it tells quite a lot about the car. Here Saabs' ads says that it's safest car in its class. I wouldn't worry about driving char. and sure Saab can't beat new BMWs or Audis in try conditions but 9-3 gives a lot of good things: perforamnce, room, fuel economy, safety cheaper than its competitors.
Good luck for your decision and Hope you go for Saab!!
