A guy I used to work with had a n/a C900 that I drove a couple times and my wife rode in a couple NG900's. We're starting to plan a family and wanted something practical and fun. Originally, my wife was hooked on the 3-series, but there were too many running around for our taste and the M3 was out of the price range. So my wife saw the SAAB/bus commerical and says she wants one. The 01's were being heavily discounted, so we went out on a Friday for a test drive. The wicked acceleration, esp over the car we had at the time and versus the n/a C900, sold me as well as the warmth of the car on a cool november evening. We would have bought the car then and there, but the network was down at the dealership so we had to wait for the next day. Kind of a hoot trading in the Geo Metro on a SAAB. There couldn't be a more practical conv with the folding seat and insane trunk volume. We made stops at IKEA and hauled wheel barrows in the car, not to mention the stuff we get in the car after Costco runs.
Now the other car (dodge strate es w/ autostick) is getting quite boring to drive, so we're thinking hard about another SAAB. I'm hoping for an 01 or 02 viggen 5dr hatch in a couple years.
The SAAB safety is not even a question and the reliability should be excellent considering the other SAAB folks I know. The reliability blurb for SAAB came with the rushed release of the 94 NG900. If you search on a this board under 'durability' you will find a link to the BBC web site where their equivalent of the Consumer Reports has the 9³ as perfect with 2 other asian makes (BMW is average and VW and MB are below). Also, being that the conv and viggen are assembled on the same line as the boxster at valmet is a bonus. I just hate taking the car to the dealership were some meat-fisted mechanic is going to overtorque everything from the oil plug to the door hinges. I can't wait 'til it hits 30k when the free maint. is up and I can do it all.
later,
tony
