I've been driving Saab's since 1980 when a black 3 door turbo with Inca wheels entered my life. Sold it 499,800 km and 11 years later for a 1986 9000T which was totalled by a City of Minneapolis snowplow and replaced with a 1991 9000T Aero and then to a 1995 NG 900 and now my current 2000 9-3. My wife had a 1988 900 traded on a 1997 NG 900. So we are a Saab family through and through.

We love the hatches, but we love Saabs even more. I'd much rather have Saab and all its other virtues around, than no Saab at all, which is what almost happened several times in the 70's and 80's before GM stepped up to the plate. While Saab may have made its reputation on the quirky hatchback, it just couldn't keep market share compared to the alternatives (SUV's, wagons). There are a few hatches left in North America, but these are niche products of very large manufacturers and not the mainstay of a niche manufacturer. In this century, if you want a car from a true nich manufacturer, prepare to pay 6 figures for it. Who will pay that for a Saab ?

People here can lament the demise of the hatch all they want. Buy a different car if all you think that the only Saab feature you want is a hatch. For every 1 person here who deserts the Saab fold I predict 3 will join. This new car looks beautiful and I suspect it will handle great. And it will still hold more than any conventional sedan.

It's a free market. If Saab looses buyers because they have no hatch, they will add one. If they gain buyers by loosing the hatch, then they will do that instead.

Now if only I had kept that 1980 black turbo....
