Hi, everyone.
I'm the proud new owner of a 1999 9-3 STD (about 5 months). I bought the car while it was under warrantee, here I am over 50k and now I have a major issue. I am being told that I meed my head gastket replaced at $880. I've looked through the 9-3 bulletin board and seen this to be a common problem. My car has not overheated, nor had anyother traumatic event happen to it. I'm desperately trying to get Saab to pay for this repair as I think (as many others do) that a $30,000 car should not need a head gasket repair at 57,000 miles...actually, I don't think that ANY car should need a head gasket repair at 57,000 miles without it being the owner's fault.
I've spoken with a Saab rep (just got off the phone). She was wonderful but still said no and so I asked to be passed to the next level (Travel Rep. or something). There's also a bit of history you should know about. About a week ago Saab just payed for my heater box replacement per the fact that it was a known defect as well (I'm really trying not to get disheartened about this car). I know this was a wonderful thing for Saab and Rosalyn (person I dealt with...highly recommended) to do, but now it's being leveraged against the head gasket repair. As a consumer I feel all the more entitled to the repair given these both being essentially design flaws in a fairly expensive car that's less than 3 years old.

My questions are:
1) Am I nuts or is this head gasket really a common problem?
2) If it is a common problem, how do I convince Saab? or at least get them to admit it if they know.
3) Does anyone know WHY it's a problem? (head and block diff. metals)
4) Could you give me your story if this has happened to you? maybe with what dealer did your repair?

I'm sure a lot of this information is out there if I keep digging, but I'm in a real pinch for time and work is nuts. I would appreciate any advice people could give me while I continue to dig through the 34k+ hits that "head gasket" turns up on this site. :-D

Thank you all so much for any help you can give me...arg!
